Microsoft recently talked about making a stronger commitment to WinUI and improving the Windows app ecosystem. But I'm struggling to see how that aligns with some of Microsoft's own products. The Windows Start Menu itself now relies heavily on web technologies, and many users argue that this has negatively impacted responsiveness and overall performance compared to more native implementations. Another example is WhatsApp. The old UWP version used around 150 MB of RAM in many cases, while the current Electron-based version can easily consume 500-600 MB or more depending on usage. This makes me wonder: If Microsoft is truly committed to WinUI and native Windows development, will they eventually rewrite major applications like Teams and VS Code using WinUI? Or is the future still centered around web-based frameworks such as Electron, with WinUI mainly serving smaller apps and specific Windows components? I'd be interested to hear what developers think. Is a large-scale shift back to native Windows apps realistic, or has the industry already decided that cross-platform web technologies are the long term direction? submitted by /u/hirenvadher954 [link] [comments]
